The Deep Field

A site-specific, immersive VR experience, combining otherworldly visual art, digital sculpture, sound design, music and video, all within a custom world, mapped 1:1 with the exhibition space — a field in Vermont.

The piece was developed in Unity over the course of 2 months and displayed on Meta Quest 2 Headsets on-site, in the actual field, during the FireFly Arts Festival in July of 2023.

Welcome to the Deep Field

  • Mapping The Default World

Satelite images and photos taken on site were combined with elevation data from the U.S. National Geographic Survey to create a virtual landscape as the backdrop for the piece.

Flora, fauna, site-specific structures and other landmarks were re-created symbolically to create a simultaneous sense of place and of otherworldliness.

Spatial audio, lighting effects, and a teleportation and grasp-interaction system — all created in Unity — further pushed the bounds of immersion for visitors to The Deep Field

  • Crafting a New Reality

With The Deep Field, I wanted to create an alternate reality “one layer below” the already-surreal Firefly Arts Festival; an event brimming with creativity, interactive art and curious experience-seekers.

I also wanted to create a place to exhibit digital artefacts — visual art, video and animation, music and digital sculpture — alongside the many physical artworks that exist on the material plane at Firefly.

Make it stand out.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
