About the Piece
Hold Me Closer was inspired by meditations on chaos, randomness, impermanence, and the melancholy beauty of life. We aspire to be unique individuals, and indeed every moment of our lives is inherently unique, no matter how much our daily lives my appear mundane or repetitive, even insignificant when zoomed out to the scale.
The Dancer’s movements, animated by tiny wires and motors, is completely random, generated every time the button is pressed within set parameters. The musical accompaniment is also live-mixed from 4 separate tracks when the performance begins, with over 1000 potential unique variations. Combined with the randomly generated light show, the potential number of unique performances are about as numerous as atoms in the universe.
Whether evocative and full of meaning, or mundane and repetitive, the performance becomes a canvas on which to project our own experience, and invites the observer to reflect on this duality in their own life.
Sound Designer’s Notes:
“I tried to walk the line between ethereal and sprite-like, but also with a little bit of foreboding and eeriness. In my mind, The Dancer is a combination of feelings; beautiful and also tragic in that it is a life-form that only comes alive for a minute at a time, and whose dance is cut short without warning. It is unclear whether it is aware of this or not. The dance is almost like waking up, a birth that ends almost immediately in death. These feelings lead me to a hybrid of dark and light tensions in the composition.
